Slidor: the 3D photo of the VR era

The Slidor app uses a custom augmented reality (AR) engine to create full-fledged in-depth photographs. Other AR apps are use augmented reality engines to insert 3D content into your photographs. Slidor, however, renders your photograph in-depth in and of itself.

Slidor tracks the position of the user’s device, capturing shots at the necessary moments and then combining the shots into an amazing 3D photograph. This 3D photograph we’ve named the “Slid”.

While we view the slid, what our vision does is move around an object, thereby giving it the great depth that it has. Amazingly, you are able to see the depth just with your own eyes, no 3D glasses or other devices necessary.


A slid can not only be viewed but also printed in-depth.

  • Slids in which depth is visible on any screen are called “Digital Slids”.
  • Meanwhile, slids designed for printing are meanwhile called “Printable Slids”. The depth on printable slids is not visible in the digital preview and can be seen only after they are printed.

Although digital and printable slids are called the same thing, the principles of their creation and further display are very different indeed.

Digital slid

What Digital Slids are is the modern evolved form of wigglegrams. Thus, in other words, this app allows you to create wigglegrams in a matter of seconds and share them as a video or gif. We can say with full confidence that it is the first app on the market to create such high-quality wigglegrams so easily. And for free. Printable slid

Printable Slids – are an even more interesting phenomenon – a real glasses-free 3D photograph. To create them, we use lenticular printing technology, which were have improved on a lot, by applying the latest technological achievements in the field of data processing, computer vision, and modern printing methods.

Although this technology has been around for a while, and you might be familiar with it from old greeting cards or modern promo products, it has still remained impossible to use for large-scale, but individualized, production.

We spent several years actively researching in the field of computer vision, processing large amounts of graphic data, optics, and modern printing methods to create this remarkable product and have achieved very high quality. More information can be found here.


How it works

During the capturing process, the app has the ability to track the device’s 6D (XYZ position + XYZ rotation) position relative to the object being captured and produce shots at the necessary moments. The shots are then processed in a special way and assembled out of them in the ready slid.

To track the device’s position, we use a technique (which we’ve created on our own) similar to Apple’s ARKit framework. The task of precisely tracking the device’s position using single camera is very challenging in its own right. The task, however, of giving people the opportunity to easily create high-quality 3D lenticular prints with any mobile device was an even more daunting one.

Our backend code for automatic printable slid creation is built on a foundation of a lot of know-how and uses breadth of modern image processing and computer vision aspects.

For that reason, it’s no wonder that we had to spend a few years getting everything to work.
